ABOUT BUCHANAN NURSERY
Buchanan Nursery consists of a bright entrance area, fully equipped playrooms for younger children on the ground floor and playrooms for older children on the upper floor. There are also large enclosed outdoor play areas which provide lots of opportunities for experimenting with play resources.
This includes building dens with woodland materials, designing and constructing with hammers, nails and blocks of wood, exploring natural materials in sensory baskets, transporting balls using guttering, selecting dressing up clothes for role play and planting and growing activities.
In order to promote confidence and self-esteem, children are given lots of opportunities to recognise their achievements, for example when reflecting on photographic records of their play displayed in online learning journals, floor books and wall displays.
OUR STAFF
Staff at Buchanan Nursery are committed to delivering the best possible early learning and quality care for your children.
All of our key staff (Nursery Manager and Supervisors) hold qualifications in childcare or early education.
All our senior staff are qualified to SVQ Level 4 or are working to complete their Childhood Studies degree and all our supporting staff are SVQ Level 3, HNC in Childcare & Education or above.
Every member of our team is trained in First Aid and are registered with the SSSC. Our Nursery Chef is experienced in catering for allergies and you are more than welcome to meet with our Chef to discuss any specific dietary requirements your child has.
Our policies on all aspects of care and procedures for Health and Safety, Emergencies and Behaviour Management are held at the nursery and are available for viewing on request.
NURSERY CURRICULUM
We adhere to the principles of Getting It Right for Every Child (also known as GIRFEC), Scotland’s national approach to improving outcomes and wellbeing for children by offering the right help at the right time from the right people. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of GIRFEC: Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included, often referred to as SHANARRI.
We promote play-based education and adhere to national guidance from the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). The CfE is split into 4 Capacities which are:
- Successful Learners
- Confident Individuals
- Effective Contributors
- Responsible Citizens
Additionally, the CfE highlights 3 Core Areas for Learning:
- Literacy
- Numeracy
- Health & Wellbeing
OUR MENU
We know how important it is for your child to have a healthy and balanced diet. Here at Buchanan House we have our very own qualified Nursery Chef who creates nutritionally balanced 4 week rolling menus, including meals from around the world such as Italian pasta and garlic bread or mild Indian curry. Morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack are all provided.
Children enjoy home cooked nutritional food, bursting with fresh fruit and vegetables, and have a choice of milk or water to drink throughout the day.
We believe that meal-times should be a happy, relaxed time where children learn social skills, manners, good hygiene practice and healthy eating habits to last them a lifetime. We also have strong links with the oral health initiative, Childsmile, which teaches and encourages good oral hygiene from a young age.
